We cannot deny that Filipinos are talented in so many genres which include writing. No wonder that there are thousands of Pinoy bloggers and writers who have showcased their talents both online and in print media. One famous platform where writers can showcase their skills is through Wattpad.
Wattpad is a social media website which allows the users to post and read stories. One can read millions of stories or write his or her own book. What makes it interesting is that you can write by chapter and your followers will be anticipating for your next post.
In the Philippines, many Wattpad writers had made a name not just on the site but even in the country’s movie industry since their books were adapted for films. Wonder what these movies are? Here they are:
1. Diary ng Panget (Diary of an Ugly Person)
Written by Denny, the film was released on April 2, 2014 and is the first Wattpad based movie. It stars Nadine Lustre, James Reid, Yassi Pressman, and Andre Paras. It is about a girl named Eya played by Lustre who was hired as a nanny for Cross (James Reid). Despite the two’s differences, they developed feelings for each other.
2.She’s Dating the Gangster
Star Cinema produced this Cathy Garcia-Molina directed movie which stars Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla. The story is written by Bianca Bernardino which is about a girl and a boy who pretended to date to make the guy’s ex-girlfriend jealous. But both fell in love. The film received positive reviews and was even aired internationally including in the United States, Canada, Australia, and United Arab Emirates.
3. Talk Back and You’re Dead
Alesana Marie wrote this book in Wattpad and was turned into a film with stars James Reid, Nadine Lustre, and Joseph Marco. This Andoy Ranay directed movie has a sequel, Never Talk Back To A Gangster as seen in its end credits.
4. Your Place Or Mine?
Acclaimed director Joel Lamangan worked with Andi Eigenmann, Bret Jackson, and Andre Paras in this book written by turning_japanese. It was released on April 29, 2015.
5. Just the Way You Are
Originally entitled as The Bet, the book is written by Kimberly Villanueva and the film adaptation is directed by Theodore Boborol. It stars Enrique Gil and Liza Soberano.
6. Ex with Benefits
Directed by Gino M. Santos, its cast includes Derek Ramsay, Coleen Garcia, and Meg Imperial. It is based on a Wattpad story by Ruth Mendoza.
7. Girlfriend for Hire
Vanessa U. de Leon directed the movie which stars Yassi Pressman and Andre Paras, based on a story by Yam-Yam28. It is about a rich guy who hired an orphaned poor girl to pretend as his girlfriend so he can avoid marrying a woman that his grandma chose for him. Although the guy clarified that she is not allowed to fall in love with him, the two eventually fell in love with each other.
8. This Time
Another film from James Reid and Nadine Lustre which is directed by Nuel Crisostomo Naval and written by Aly Almario (alyloony). The film is about two childhood friends who developed a romantic relationship but without labels.
9. Bloody Crayons
This movie is set for release on July 12, 2017 which is a horror, suspense and thriller film. Directed by Topel Lee, its cast includes Janella Salvador, Elmo Magalona, Sofia Andres, Diego Loyzaga, Jane Oineza, Maris Racal, Yves Flores, Empoy Marquez, and Ronnie Alonte. A masked killer is set off to kill the group of graduating students who came to an island for vacation.
10. Never Talk Back To A Gangster
The sequel of Talk Back and You’re Dead with the same lead stars and director. Alesana Marie also wrote the story.
Aside from those mentioned, Teen Clash by Ilyn Anne Danganan and Size Matters by Soju, which are currently in production, are also based on Wattpad stories.
